Voice stuff

Just a quick note on the voice procedure performed on 31st Jan, over an UNMH. The goal was to temporarily medialize the paralysed vocal cord by injection — the intent being to get a better/louder voice  by giving the non-paralysed cord something to work against and to actually close the windpipe, rather than a large gap existing. The procedure was performed under general anesthesia, also giving the surgeon the chance to get a look look at my cords and see what is going on after the accident in November.

TL;DR — limited success. Voice is better, but far from great. Good enough to go back to work, but it’ll be a challenge.

Vocal cords

Among the most ‘impacting’ and lasting of the effects of being hit is that one of my vocal cords is paralyzed. This means my voice is pretty pants, and gets tired easily. I’m hoarse and super-quiet, and if I try and be louder I just get less intelligible.

Tomorrow (Jan 31) I’m going to go for a temporary fix — a few months — where they inject a bulking compound into the cord. Eventually, the body will absorb this (so if the nerve does return, there’s nothing to undo) but in the meantime the objective is to get the cords to meet and give me a better voice. In the meantime, I am drinking a tonne of water and humming at the advice of a retired VA speed therapist; just trying to get the cord to move over more.

More updates later this week, maybe.

Recovery Journal

My PT had suggested that I keep some sort of recovery journal, in case someone else googles and wants to know about major cycling accidents (though with my PageRank, the odds of this coming up for anyone are /super/ slim). Regardless, I thought it useful, so I’ll at least try

I’ve been non-weight-bearing now for almost 8 weeks; 3 of those spent mostly in bed at various hospitals. I’ve found that I can use crutches for almost everything, with a walker useful for getting in and out of the shower with a LITTLE more stability. For the most part, the healing has been fairly smooth — but there’s definitely been more than one or two wrinkles. First, a couple of days where the hip has been upset from the PT — minor. Second, the non-weight bearing led to the foot tensing up and resulting nerve pain. I’ll talk a little more about both after the jump. Third — voice damage from the larynx injuries.  Finally, dental work — though I’ve been surprisingly lucky there.

TL;DR — the hip is healing well, with some nasty issues with nerve pain and some stiffness. Weight bearing is anticipated, barring unseen issues, Feb 13th. The voice is not doing as well, with a vocal cord still paralyzed and I sound very hoarse and quiet. We’re hoping to address that temporarily Jan 31st.

Jaw unwiring

Well…

Monday was a banner day — after 6 weeks, they unwired my jaw. That’s 4 weeks of smoothies and soup, which is about as exciting as it sounds.

The bad news; I had realised they had basically safety wired the arch bars together. What I didn’t realise is that the arch bars were held on by being wired AROUND a bunch of my teeth. It took a while to first cut the up and down wired and then to untwist and snip or pull free the arch bars — not the funnest time of my life, but!

Home and to eating! The jaw is pretty sore, and the teeth sensitive, so we started with good super soft components of an English breakfast (at 8pm). Heinz baked beans and scrambled eggs!
